The capital of Goa Panjim or panaji as it is officially known is situated on the banks of the river Mandovi. There is a promenade right along the river side where one can take a walk and enjoy the cool environs of the Mandovi river on one side and the row of trees on the other. Panjim has several tourist attractions on offer, the main ones are described below.
Among the important landmarks are the Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception located in the heart of the city. It was built in 1541, when Panjim was still a fishing village. The beautiful flight of criss cross stairs leading to the entrance of the Church along with coconut trees surrounding it makes a picture postcard scenery as shown in the picture below.

red tiled roofs and old Portuguese era houses painted blue and white has a quaint old world charm about it. The residents of Fountainhas continue
the tradition established since the Portuguese era who insisted that each house be colour painted after every moonsoon.
On the southern end of this district one can find the St. Sebastian Chapel.
Be sure to pay a visit to the Fountainhas Festival of arts held every year in the Month of
January or February, if you are in Goa at that time. Lots of works of art are showcased at the festival. Besides
leading Goan Musicians like Remo Fernandes perform Live at the festival. It also brings alive the memories of a bygone era.
Some of the other tourist attractions include the Adilshahi Palace, until until recently
was used as the venue for Goa Assembly sessions, the Menezes Braganza Institute
where one can see fine examples of azulejos, the hand painted tile art of the Portuguese era
which still survives in Panjim even today. You can still buy or order them from a workshop
located near St. Sebastian chapel.
The Azad Maidan with a memorial therin, Mahalaxmi Temple, Jama Masjid mosque and the St. Tome Chapel complete the list.
Popular Places in Panjim include the 18th June Road which is a favorite shopping area with locals as well as the tourists and Kala Academy which is centre for perfoming arts.
Finally is the Miramar beach. Located at the outskirts of the capital city, close to the venue of the International Film Festival of India, it is an ideal place to unwind after a hard days work. It is extremely popular with people of Panjim and surrounding areas.
