   Mapusa, the capital of Bardez taluka (Sub-district) in North Goa is one of the important towns of Goa. It is only 12 Kms from capital of Goa Panaji and only about 8 Kms from our resort, Hotel Seagull located at Calangute. The Church of Our Lady of Miracles is one of the important landmarks to visit. Old Buildings over a century old include the Administracao dos Communidades de Bardez building near Mapusa Court as well as the Athaide Municipal Library.
   The highlight of Mapusa is the famous weekly Mapusa Friday Market or bazaar which is a big attraction for tourists and locals alike. The Market planned and built by the Portuguese has extemely good planning and has rows of shops occupied by a wide variety of traders.
   Among them being Cloth Merchants, goldsmiths, steel, Food items, Hardware shops, Tea and Coffee including exotic tea flavors as well as coffee beans, Pastry Shops where you can get authentic goan delicacies as well as several others.

   Local women have a wide array of items for sale from organic home grown fresh vegetables like Irvil (a type of beans), cucumbers, lady fingers, brinjals, large yellow Moira Bananas, local sausages called (Chourico) which come in long strings, dried salted fish, pottery items that include utensils, flower pots and decorative items as well as an endless assortment of other items. Furniture and potted plants are also available for sale.
   For those of you who are a little adventurous minded and would like to partake of Goan fast food sold on the street, there are a lot of stalls near the Alankar theatre as well as few stalls in the market area.
   With a lot of foreign tourists frequenting the Mapusa Friday market you will also find nowadays souvenir, trinket and carpet sellers from other parts of India. At times the Friday market can get so crowded that it becomes impossible to get a foothold. The market wind up at dusk.
