Handicrafts of Goa – Carved Wooden Religious Statues

   Among the Handicrafts of Goa, a very important one requiring high degree of skill is the art of carving religious statues. Mr Maximo Coutinho from Siolim in North Goa has perfected this art. He not only carves statues but has restored several old heritage wooden statues to their former Glory. He also says that if anyone wants to have a statue done from a photograph he can do it as well. He has already executed such type of orders successfully in the past.
   Besides statues, he also specializes in producing Carved furniture to the exact specifications as in the furniture of the Portuguese era.

Restoration Work On Heritage Statues

   Mr. Coutinho has sucessfully restored several heritage wooden statues. The statue of Crucified Christ shown alongside is from St. Anthony's Church Siolim which was successfully resored in Oct 2007. Restoration works have also been done by him at several other Catholic Churches in Goa. He has also redone the gold paint work at Church Altars of several churches.
   Some of the other notable works done include Crucifix done for Duler Church, Statue of Infant Jesus for Pilerne Church, Several Statues of Our Lady and St. Jerome's Statue.
   He already has clients from several parts of the world including from United Kingdom, Sweden and Germany.
